Yup, you read that right. I’ve already got a running list of mistakes as I start my new business ventures as a one woman show. Heres the thing, I can either be embarrassed, dwell over it, and maybe even quit, or I can make use of it, learn from it, and share it with you. Keep reading so you can learn from my mistakes and avoid making them yourself!
Mistake #1: Starting too much at once: Between waiting too long to start, and starting too much at once.. I always make a mistake here. Why? Because I’m way too excited (or nervous!) to get my work out into the world. If I wait too long, I never launch.. but when I just get so excited and release everything, the launch is not only not as successful but it gives me 100x more work to do between A, B & C.
Mistake #1: What can I do differently: Even though I’m overly excited, and know my work is being waited on by people who need it… I need to release one thing at a time, and have the other projects being worked on and prepared in the background, ready to launch when each is ESTABLISHED. Why? I am only a one woman show, and at this point in my business have ZERO support in creating & maintaining a presence online.
Mistake #2: Not being prepared or thinking ahead for posting : I should not have to create, write, edit and publish a piece of content for each project every single day to entice engagement and community responses. It’s way too much work each day when I have at minimum 3 things going on. It truly is the most important, especially in the baby stages of a project that I am sharing and showing up online every single day. But of course, only a few weeks after launching, sickness is bound to hit with my kids currently in public school. So not only is it hard to keep on top of creating content on the fly every single day, but it is IMPOSSIBLE when I’m sick and taking care of sick kids.. again.. one woman show!
Mistake #2: What can I do differently: Theres a few things here that need to happen because there are so many moving parts to showing up online.. more than people assume there to be. Time blocking is your BESTFRIEND for your schedule in terms of planning, creating and editing content! But the real game changer here, for not being tied to your phone/tablet/laptop all day every day when you have multiple accounts to show up on, is POST SCHEDULING. Yup, you read that right. Schedule your posts. There is nothing better than being able to create most (or all, if you prefer) of your content at once so that if something comes up, you wont have to worry about whether or not you can manage posting something today. This has probably been my biggest mistake as of COURSE our entire house was hit with the cold/flu the FIRST week of school and it’s now been 3 weeks. I’m still not better, behind on my housework and can’t find the time to sit down and post, or respond to DM’s currently. I’m falling behind.
Mistake #3: Not being Established enough before moving forward: In the baby stages of a business, especially when you’re just introducing your work to the world, it requires a lot of time and energy! Split between multiple things this this proves to be difficult! Obviously, all of my different projects require different content for different readers and consumers. This stretches me pretty thin when I allow myself to get into too many things at once. A little bit here and a little bit there, instead of full-on focus on one project at a time. At the beginning of projects, from the launch to the established brand presence, a lot of things can happen and change. It’s important I pay attention and adjust as needed!
Mistake #3: What can I do differently: Slow the F down. Actually though, stop launching three things at once! This one is really difficult for me because once I have an idea, I need to execute it, or else I wait too long. For me, personally, this is a fine line I walk. Between having patience and sharing my excitement. It’s difficult for me to hold both of these feelings at once. I have 0:100.. Patience:Excitement. This is probably one of my biggest issues, but to be fair, I’d rather launch it and iron out the kinks we we go, than not launch it at all waiting for the perfect time. Because I’ve done both. Honestly I’d be a millionaire by now if I launched my ideas at the right times instead of fully giving up on them.
Adjusting to these 3 mistakes will not only make a huge difference in my business, but it could change the trajectory of yours as well! Preparation is key, and overdoing it will put you behind more than it will ever get you ahead. But, heres the key… you have to start. Start messy, start unsure, start unprepared if you must. Work out the kinks as you move through your business. But trust me, when someone offers you advice on their mistakes, TAKE IT so you dont make the same ones! Please, whatever you do, never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. Mistakes WILL be made, and things will need to be adjusted as time goes on. It’s way better to start scared than to not start at all!
